Wedding Cake Portions: How Much Cake, is Too Much?

One of the most common questions I’m asked when designing a wedding cake is: “How much cake should we order?” It’s such an important part of your planning, and the answer might not be what you expect.

Do You Need Cake for Every Guest?

Traditionally couples used to order enough cake for every single guest—but in reality, not everyone will have a slice. After years of experience, I typically recommend ordering cake for around 75% of your total guest numbers.

Why? Because:

Some guests will be too busy dancing or chatting

Others may opt for dessert alternatives if your venue provides them

Evening guests don’t always head straight for the cake table

Ordering for 75% is a great balance and ensures there’s plenty to go around without unnecessary waste.

“No one eats cake”.. Total Myth

Most my couples report that by the end of the night or their day 2 celebrations, the cake was gone, with guests asking for seconds lol. This is because we have planned together for correct portions. If you would like some for yourselves to enjoy after the wedding, remember to ask your wedding planner or serving staff to put some away for you. Good cake will be eaten!

I Won’t Ever Oversell You Cake

One thing that’s really important to me is honesty. I will never oversell you cake just to increase the size or price of your order. Wedding cakes should be enjoyed, not left over in huge quantities at the end of the night.

Every Wedding Is Different

There’s no one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to cake portions. Your ideal size will depend on:

Your guest numbers

Type of guests

The timing of your cake cutting

What other food options you have throughout your day

Your venue’s serving style

That’s why portion planning is always tailored to you.

We’ll Plan This Together

During your consultation we’ll talk through this in detail. I’ll guide you on portion sizes and tier options, so you can feel confident you’re making the right choice. If you’re currently planning your wedding and unsure about cake size, don’t worry.. that’s what I’m here for!
